This morning on 11th February 2023 at Menlo Pier, two lives have been lost, and a third is clinging to life in the hospital. Tragically, one of those who perished in the incident was John Keenan, at only 16 years old, a talented boxer with his whole life ahead of him. Who was John Keenan?
John Keenan, a promising young boxer from the Olympic Boxing Club Galway, has left Ireland and the boxing community in shock. Located at 32 Camillaun Park, Newcastle, Galway in Ireland, the club announced his death via their official Facebook page on Saturday 11th of February 2021. The Olympic Boxing Club Galway will mourn this loss for a long time as he was highly regarded by everyone connected to the club.
How did John Keenan die? What was his cause of death?
Residents of Galway and the surrounding county awoke to a tragic discovery on Saturday morning, as it was reported that three men had been pulled from the water after a single-vehicle accident occurred near Menlo Pier at approximately 2.40am. The three who succumbed to injuries were taken to University Hospital Galway, where one of the identified as John Keenan was announced dead followed by Christopher Stokes who was the second person in the car. The third young one is still believed to be in a critical state.
Olympic Boxing Club Galway has announced the death of John Keenan stating “It’s with deep pain, heartbreak, and sorrow that the untimely and tragic death of John Keenan occurred in the early hours of the morning on 11th February 2023. John has tragically passed away after an accident that occurred this morning at Menlo Pier.
A Spokesperson from Gardai reported “At approximately 2:40am, Gardaí and emergency services received reports of a car in the water at Menlo Pier in Galway city. “Three males were removed from the water and taken to University Hospital Galway where two of the males have since passed away. The condition of the third male is currently described as critical.”
John has been at Olympic BC since he was 10 years following his brother Martin Sammon. John had always had a big smile on his face and would go out of his way to do anything for anyone, He never let anything get him down.
