Martinez was known for his great leadership and his exceptional coaching skills, having helped the Texans start their NCAA Division I reclassification with three straight winning seasons. In just his second full-time season in 2018, he helped coach the defense to the most successful season in school history, which included a 12-1 record, the first outright Lone Star Conference title in program history, and a No. 5 national ranking.
