Jim Button was a founding member of Calgary’s Village Brewery, a craft brewer. He was regarded as a mentor and a role model for many people and was well-known for his love of community development.
He was also a philanthropist who sought to raise millions of dollars for the University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine’s Chair in Pediatric Psychosocial Oncology and Survivorship. He was also well-known for organizing a swab-a-thon at the Village Brewery to help a childhood buddy who was fighting leukemia find a donor match for a transplant that would save their lives.

Jim Button passed away recently after a lifelong battle with cancer. He had been battling the disease for several years, during which time he continued to focus his energies on building community. He announced his death on his online blog in a farewell letter he had prepared in advance, in which he wrote about living a full life with few regrets and many adventures, love, gratitude, and friendships.

Expressing his grief over Jim Button’s death, his friend Greg Clark shared a Facebook post. He wrote, “The last time I saw Jim Button was on a walk with our pal Avnish Mehta on a glorious fall day. We talked politics (of course), family (obviously), and how each of us was doing in our lives. For those of you who know Jim, it was exactly like the hundreds or thousands or tens of thousands of similar encounters. Jim was curious, caring, thoughtful, sweet, and damn funny. I came away knowing more than I did when we started, and I felt inspired to do some good in the world.
That is Jim’s legacy. Well, that and the incredible family he nurtured and who I know he loved as much as anyone can be loved.
The world is a lesser place without you, but so much better for you having been in it.
Love you Jim. ❤️❤️”
Another one of Jim Button’s friends, Mandy Stobo, wrote, “To the moon and back, to the baboon and back, to the hopes and dreams and connections and teams and back. Again. And again.
Love you forever, our ultralight beam, the only one who could always show us what things really mean- our one and only, Jimmy. Love you so much. Forever and always. Can’t wait to paint every day in the studio with you. My heart, Jim Button 💥❤️💥 (don’t know what else to say as I’m bawling and you told me I’ve cried enough 😂 I just can’t stop) love you. So much. So so much.”
