He was essential to the 2009 launch of the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at HCA Florida Northside Hospital, which has helped numerous residents and fellows succeed across the nation. Dr. Wassmer was also well-known in his hometown of St. Petersburg, Florida, where he was born and raised. He had a lifelong commitment to St. Paul’s Catholic Church and was a founding member of the Knights of Columbus Council, making a lasting contribution to the neighborhood he loved.

Dr. Wassmer had suffered a severe stroke one week prior to his passing, and he was recovering at Bayfront Hospital when he passed away on Wednesday evening, 22nd February 2023. The funeral mass is set to take place at St. Paul’s Catholic Church on February 25, 2023, to honor Dr. Wassmer’s legacy and contributions to the medical and local communities.

Expressing grief over Dr. Peter Wassmer’s death, the Graduate Medical Education at Northside Hospital shared a Facebook post. They wrote, “Today we honor the legacy of Dr. Peter C. Wassmer (1960-2023). Dr. Wassmer was an integral part of establishing the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship here at HCA Florida Northside Hospital in 2009, and over his many years of teaching, he has helped to shape Residents and Fellows who have gone on to successful careers across the country. He was also at the forefront of innovation here in his own community of St. Petersburg Florida. We offer our deepest sympathies to his family and friends at this most difficult of times, and will strive to continue to help mold the innovative and compassionate physicians of the future.”

Another person, Richard Smith, wrote, “RIP. Dr. Wassmer was my cardiologist for the last 3 years. He headed up my aortic valve replacement team. I credit him with saving my life. He will be missed. God bless his family.”
