Thanks for that wonderful write up, it really boost my moral in furthering more, like you said “not just mere university certificate but learning the hard way how important it is to get fully equipped on the skills employers are looking for”.

Comment on Work & child care: A struggle for men and women by Hasanat Alamgir https://iloblog.org/2019/07/23/work-child-care-a-struggle-for-men-and-women/comment-page-1/#comment-71322 Tue, 23 Jul 2019 21:31:19 +0000 http://iloblog.org/?p=2919#comment-71322 I read this piece with great interest. As a dad I have shared a fair amount of parental responsibility in my life even though my traditional role as the primary breadwinner of the family brings additional strain on me as I need to continue to have a well-paid job and I need to be “very serious” in my profession and “outperform” my colleagues to thrive. The employers often have a more favorable view about their female workers assuming they bear all the family and childbearing responsibilities. While many fathers like me share a bulk of this responsibility while continue to outperform others in jobs we are not able to access any of the paid leave, flexibility, or accommodation at our workplace. It is expected as a male worker that I will be able to fly out in a short notice, I will attend a late night meeting, or often work in the weekends. It is time to make some of these workplace benefits gender-neutral.

Comment on The future of work – The time for talking is over by Hasanat Alamgir https://iloblog.org/2019/07/16/the-future-of-work-the-time-for-talking-is-over/comment-page-1/#comment-71269 Sun, 21 Jul 2019 18:08:06 +0000 http://iloblog.org/?p=2912#comment-71269 ILO has a leading role in achieving SDG 8 (Promoting sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all); however, for inclusive growth, the political commitment of the government of the respective country is a key enabler as there are large pockets of population in most developing countries who are usually left behind in any major development agenda or program. For example, rough estimates suggest that about 10% of any country’s population may have some sort of disability and in absence of a functional social support or safety system, they often live as destitute unless their families are wealthy and supportive. ILO should play an awareness building role to mainstream these vulnerable population groups and make sure that development policies and programs include their inputs and concerns. ILO must work with the local employers so that they see the value of making workplace modifications; people with certain disability will then get jobs and participate in economic activities.
